GARDEN CALENDAR

Up to date advice on what to do in the garden this month!

By following our Garden Calendar below, you can always be sure that you are making the right choices in your garden.

Make sure you check back each month, as we are regularly updating this blog with relevant information.

Veges

• Plant cabbage, cauli, broccoli, spinach, onion, leek, pak choi, celery, silverbeet, corn, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers and lettuce seedlings.

• Plant main crop potatoes.

• Sow peas, beetroot, radish, parsnips & carrots.

• Add compost or peat to the soil in the vegetable garden.

Flowers

• Plant cineraria, poppies, lobelia, gazania, alyssum, ranunculus, nemesia, livingstone daisies, statice, sweet peas, sweet william, geraniums, delphiniums, carnations, astercleosia, petunia, marigolds, impatiens, cosmos, phlox and aquilegia.

• Feed spring flowering annuals with Novatec Nitrophoska.

• Plant perennial hemerocallis, phlox, iris, delphiniums, hostas, astilbe & lupin.

• Plant gladioli, dahlia & begonia tubers.

Indoor

• Increase watering as the weather warms up.

• Phalaenopsis Orchids now in.

• Start basil and chilli plants off inside.

• Repot plants that have outgrown their containers.

• Liquid feed fortnightly.

General

• Plant strawberries and feed with Thrive Liquid Strawberry Food or Tui Strawberry Food as fruit develop.

• Spray peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots & cherries with Copper or Bravo for leaf curl.

• Plant water lilies.

• Sow new lawn and patch sow established lawn where required.

• Feed established lawns with a high nitrogen lawn food & aerate if compacted.

• Feed summer flowering shrubs and spring bulbs that have finished flowering.

• Prune tips of fuchsias & pelargoniums to encourage bushiness.

• Feed & prune camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons and magnolias after flowering.

• Spray roses with shield or super shield, and give a dressing of rose fertiliser.

• Plant herbs such as coriander and tarragon.

• Protect young seedlings from slugs and snails with Quash or Blitzem.

• Prune climbers like Wisteria and Jasmine after flowering to control vigorous growth.

• Clip fast-growing hedges.

• If young seedlings are attacked by downy mildew, spray with liquid copper or copper oxychloride.

• Spray grapes with Yates Fungus Fighter at 14-day intervals to prevent downy mildew, powdery mildew and blackspot.

• Feed & mulch fruit trees, roses, perennials, trees & shrubs.

• Place pheromone traps in apple trees to guard against codling moth.
