GARDEN CALENDAR

Up to date advice on what to do in the garden this month!

By following our Garden Calendar below, you can always be sure that you are making the right choices in your garden.

Make sure you check back each month, as we are regularly updating this blog with relevant information.

Veges

Plant cabbage, cauli, broccoli, spinach, onion, pak choi, celery, silverbeet, corn, zucchini, brussel sprouts, beans, celery, beetroot, leeks, and lettuce seedlings.

Use derris dust or Kiwicare Organic Caterpillar Bio Control for white cabbage butterfly caterpillars.

Use soil insect killer for carrot rust fly.

Garlic, onions, tomatoes and sweet corn may be ready for harvest now.

Harvest new potatoes.

Flowers

Plant lobelia, gazania, alyssum, verbena, sweet william, geraniums, delphiniums, carnations, petunia, marigolds, impatiens, cosmos, salvia, begonia, snap dragons, portulaca, gypsophila, dahlia, zinnia, swan plants, campanula, stock and marigolds

Feed summer flowering annuals with Flower Power

Plant autumn flowering bulbs such as nerines, & amaryllis

Stake dahlias and other later summer flowering perennials

Deadhead perennials and annuals, and keep watering well to encourage a second flowering

Indoor

Water regularly as plants will dry out quickly in the warmer weather.

Repot plants that have outgrown their containers.

Liquid feed fortnightly, Thrive Liquid Houseplant for flowering plants and Nitrosol for foliage plants.

Repot last winters cyclamens and keep moist to encourage new shoots.

General

Feed water lilies.

Feed established lawns with a high nitrogen lawn food & aerate if compacted.

Feed summer flowering shrubs.

Spray roses with Super Shield or Kiwicare Spectrum, and give a dressing of rose fertiliser.

Protect young seedlings from slugs and snails by sprinkling Quash or Blitzem around them.

Spray grapes with copper oxychloride or fungus fighter at 14-day intervals to prevent downy mildew, powdery mildew and black spot.

Keep all areas of the garden well mulched to conserve water.

Place pheromone traps in apple trees to guard against codling moth.

Stone fruit should be sprayed with Thiram Fungus Control or Nature's Way Fungus Spray to prevent brown rot.

Cut back scrappy herbs to get a second growth burst out of them.

Take tip cuttings of soft stemmed plants like coleus and impatiens.

Take semi-hardwood cuttings of plants like fuschia, roses and hydrangea.
